Graham K Norman Architect
Riverside, Pooley Bridge
The existing house commands a fantastic location at the mouth of River Eamont and Lake Ullswater but sadly doesn't make the most of its location in architectural terms.
We were commisioned to find a practical solution to making weatherproof the existing stone gable which leaked during adverse weather conditions.
Whilst the simplest solution would have been to rebuild the gable wall, the clients were excited by our proposal for a covered external sitting area extending out from the existing gable with an oversailing natural slate canopy roof which terminates in a dramatic 'prow'.
The confident architectural statement continues in the form of the uncompromising freestanding chimney stack which removes smoke from the built in fireplace and barbecue adjacent to the sitting area.
The finishes throughout are of a high quality, particularily the polished Elterwater finished walls and slate floor with recessed up-lighters, and timberwork finished in stained Douglas Fir.
The finished addition to the house has transfomed an unelegant and problematic area in what is a sculptural but restrained solution.
